Jesse Bear's Tra-LA Tub (Jesse Bear Board Books)
Published in Hardcover by Aladdin Library (September, 1994)
Average review score:

Jesse Bear's Tum-Tum Tickle (Jesse Bear Board Books)The first time my son saw a Jesse Bear Board Book at 10 months old we were at the library. I had to re-check it out 2 times (the max they would let me) because he couldn't part with it. This started me on a hunt for all Jesse Bear Board Books. My son is now 17 months and they are still his favorites. He can say them a long with me. We read them over and over and over every day! He loves lots of books, but these are truly the greatest hit I have seen yet. After teaching school to Kindergarteners and Pre-schoolers, using the other Jesse Bear Books, I am glad to find Jesse Bear books for the toddler. We are sold on Jesse Bear at our house. What a fun way for children to be introduced to the world of words!

Journeys With the Ice Bear

An exciting essay on bears in nature. Extreme PhotographyKennan Ward:''Grizzlies in the Wild": This is the stuff that gets a "couch potato" out to the campsites! Nature at it's extreme, Indian legend, bears so huge and unique that that they are known far and wide by their names alone. Carniverous and dangerous, the author respects them all. The tenacity of Ward's pursuits and his dedication as a photographer, brings us one of the most inspiring and picturesque books that i've read in a very long time.

The Junction Boys: How Ten Days in Hell With Bear Bryant Forged a Championship Team
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (November, 2001)
Average review score:

Loved it! And I'm not an Aggie. After watching The Junction Boys on ESPN, I knew I had to read this book. Of course the movie barely scratched the surface of the story. Jim Dent does an excellent job of bringing the historical events of Aggie football in the early 50s to life. I'm not a big fan of college football, and know very little about Texas A&M; however, after reading this book I wanted to know more about Paul Bryant and college football. You don't have to be a football fan to enjoy this book. Coach Bryant's philosophy of life would serve us all well--hell, he should have been president. Of the 30+ players that survived Coach Bryant's 10 day boot camp from Hell, many went on to successful careers in business, football, and coaching. The success of his students is testament to his abilities as a leader, teacher, and coach. Jim Dent makes it palatable in this book.
I recently purchased The Undefeated by Jim Dent, which is a story of the Oklahoma Sooners, and have found it equally enjoyable. Jim Dent is a great writer, and I'm thankful to have discovered him.

Kelly Bear Behavior

Helping me to help my daughter. It's easier to talk with my daughter about important things with Kelly Bear's help. Sometimes when I try to talk about helping others, being polite or truthful, it seems kind of preachy but Kelly Bear helps me do it in a loving way that she accepts. Thanks Kelly Bear. You are adorable.

Kelly Bear Feelings: Feelings
Published in Paperback by Bureau for at Risk Youth (June, 1989)
Average review score:

Kelly Bear's Feelings is a Great Character Education BaseWith the help of a delightful green furry friend, Kelly Bear, kindergarten students at Pamlico County Primary School, have a greater awareness of feelings. As School Counselor, I embrace Leah Davies' Kelly Bear series. The Feelings Book is one of several Kelly Bear products that allow children to examine feelings. Kelly Bear explores all feelings children have: happy, sad, angry, excitement, embarrassment, jealousy, proud, lonely, afraid, and loved. "Kelly Bear Feelings" teach children they are not alone in their feelings and teaches them ways to handle their emotions. They learn how to deal with everyday problems and situations in a positive manner. Each feeling discussed by Kelly Bear is related to an example that is readily understood by children. Most children have experienced the fear of darkness or jealousy of a newborn sibling. These normal feelings are discussed freely with peers through Kelly Bear's encouragement. They are asked to describe times when they are scared and then to share things that they can do to feel less afraid. Kelly Bear is my partner in character education. In fact, the local mental health association consultation has collaborated with our school and with the state association to make this a school-wide character education program. All teachers in our school have Kelly Bear puppets and books in their classrooms. Through Kelly Bear feelings our children are taught some helpful interpersonal skills that will enhance their success.

The Killer Bear
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Average review score:

My Boys Were Cheering For More! When roudy, squirmy boys beg for more, you know you have a hit in your hands! Not only did the story carry them - and me - along, the lessons taught can carry them through life! In a very natural fashion, Hutchens introduces themes such as the joy of hard work, manners, cleanliness, the foolishness of drunkenness, caring for others, Bible reading and prayer.
This book could be used as a Sunday School class discussion - a week per chapter. Its strength is that though filled with nuggests of sound Christian wisdom and advice, it is not preachy or devoid of story line. We enjoyed this breif tome so much, we are looking forward to starting another Sugar Creek Gang book tomorrow. This fun read is worth the time and generated some healthy discussion. It is definitely boy friendly! (Note: I caught my 11 year old daugther listening in as well.)
